This week we’re taking you for a quick session of monument hopping to five of the best places in Oman where arts and culture take centre stage:
1. Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
This iconic monument is one of the most celebrated landmarks in Oman. From its modernised Islamic architecture on the outside, to its elaborate and majestic chandelier that illuminates the ceiling, and the embellished mosaic patterns gracing the walls of its interior, this mosque is a true architectural masterpiece. And, you’ll get to meet the bat-woman who will be your tour guide. Note that non-muslim visitors are allowed inside the mosque during visiting hours only.

2. National Museum of Oman
For those looking for an experience full of Oman’s rich history and revered culture must stop by the National Museum. The place has various galleries that offer a glimpse into the Omani heritage including Renaissance, Maritime History, and Arms and Armour. In short, it’s a one-stop for all things Oman.

3. Royal Opera House Muscat
If you’re looking for a place that delivers top-notch production and an ambience for the kings, look no further. The ROHM holds some of the best opera and jazz performances, world-class ballet shows, and critically acclaimed plays featuring international acts from around the world. Visitors can also take morning tours to explore and admire the beauty in all its glory. If hunger stroke, step into the adjacent mall, Opera Galleria, for a mix of fine and casual diners.

4. The Museum of Frankincense Land and Frankincense Trail
The earthy and sweet-smelling aroma of burnt frankincense and the land from which its grown carries a deep admiration from the people of Oman, which makes it a must-visit attraction for both locals and tourist visitors. You can take a budget flight to Salalah and visit the Museum of Frankincense Land, then head over to the Frankincense Trail to enjoy a garden of frankincense trees, some of which are said to be as old as 200 years.

5. Jabreen Castle
Said to be built in the late 17th century, the Jibreen Castle is a historic palace full of historic memories. Situated in a beautiful palm-treed garden in the town of Bahla, and is about 175 Kilometres away from the capital. A must-visit for history buffs and castle admirers.

6. Nizwa Souq
Souq Nizwa is a time-honoured marketplace where you can find the best handicrafts and pottery items in Oman. The souq is also popular for livestock market, traditional guns, and silver. Its familial atmosphere and traditional design inspired by muddy-coloured old forts give the place a character of its own.
