Old Muscat is one of the few neighbourhoods that kept its olden charms and unique atmosphere alive, making it one of the key destinations for visitors to explore. The place is filled with beautiful touristic spots that include some historical monuments that offer a peek into the heritage and culture of Oman. Here are five places you must visit when in Old Muscat.
1. Al Jalali and Al Mirani Forts
These iconic forts are some of the most famous in Oman, overlooking the Gulf of Oman. These ancient shelters were built by the Portuguese empire in the 1580s and are currently used as a private museum of the Oman history, exhibiting cannons, maps, muskets and matchlocks, rugs and a variety of artefacts. Though the forts are not open for the general public, they still hold a special place in Oman’s history (and our hearts). Its picturesque view from the outside is worth marvelling at.

2. Al Alam Palace
Al Alam Palace is one of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said’s palaces, it’s located in old Muscat, isolated and protected by Al Jalai & Al Mirani forts. Built in 1972, the palace is nothing short of a wonder, with an architecture that showcases inspired Islamic motifs with a hint of modernity, and a colour palette that sports eye-catching shades of blue and yellow. Visitors are allowed to visit the palace and take photographs from outside the gate only, but trust me, it’s worth it.
