Set in a place where Time and Space do not exist, wonderful, life-like wooden puppets enact Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s famous classic, The Sleeping Beauty in period costume. The ballet is about a princess who, at the celebration of her birth, is cursed by a wicked fairy. The curse condemns the lovely little princess to die at the age of sixteen, but she is saved by the counter-spell of a good fairy. Instead of dying, the beautiful princess will sleep for a hundred years when she will be wakened with a kiss bestowed by a handsome prince.
With dance and spoken dialogue, Tchaikovsky’s music is poetically woven into a magical puppet show for all ages. The creator of this charming show is Compagnia Marionettistica Carlo Colla & Figli, a company established by an Italian family that has been dedicated to puppet theatre since the early nineteenth century and is now world-renowned. Tchaikovsky’s music is played by the Orpheus Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Alevtina Ioffe, one of the most promising and versatile conductors of her generation. Maestro Ioffe conducts major world and Russian classical works in a repertoire that includes more than fifty operas and ballets.
The Carlo Colla Puppet Theatre will present their wonderful production of Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty on Saturday 8th December at 4:00 pm. For further information and booking consult the ROHM website: www.rohmuscat.org.om
